1:55 am.  Last Call

"Last call for alcohol!..... Show's over....... Get one for the road."
Empty mugs clank as they're gathered from the empty tables.
Haul 'em behind the bar to be washed, rinsed and sanitized.
Check the upstairs, tell the pool players it's the last game.
The musician unplugs from the amp & nestles his guitar in its case.
Pay the musician, count the drawer, leave change for tomorrow night.
Unplug the amp.  Lock the amp and mikes in the closet below the stairs.
Put a couple of chairs at each table, empty the ashtrays.  Put out the trash.

The place is empty now.

Check the kegs in the cooler.  Replace the empties.
Put long necks in to chill.  Put the eggs and jalapenos in the cooler.
Hide the bank bag.  Turn out the lights.  Lock the doors
"Let's go home, Pup."

Dear Dale,

Reading all these e-mails.  Damn its been years since I thought about those
pyramid cowboy hats.  I remember working the booth at the Livestock Show and
Rodeo with you.  We had Frank Davis' stuffed two-headed calf with a hat on
each head.  Sure did manage to upset a few folk with that one.

My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Love to you and yours,
Jean

Hey Dale!!!

I'm wearing my pyramid cowboy hat. Did you ever see Chuck Barris
wear the one I gave him on the Gong Show? It is beautiful here in California
today and I wish you could come for a visit. I am going to try and come to
Houston sometime shortly after Mardi Gras to see you and my mom. My band will
be Hawaii for Fat Tuesday! You are the greatest! See you soon, Doug Lacy

P.S. here is a fun picture for your desk top or whatever

1-24-02

Dale,
I haven't seen you since the days of the Pyramid Cowboy Hat, but, I'll
never forget you telling that TV reporter that your life was 15% better
because of wearing the HAT! I can only wish you a whole bushel full of
those hats. Good luck , Amigo.

Hey Dale....

I read the article in the Press I think it was....very good ....wish I
were famous.....!!  Calico is off and running again....nice to be back
working except that i hate to work....!  I would rather play and be
crazy.....oh....I am crazy...!!  I took a vacation for the first time in
3 years over the holidays....I guess it was about 2 and a half weeks
away from the tee shirt shop....kept my nieces for a few days and got
the flu/cold thing....spent my vacation in the house sneezing for two
weeks...glad that is gone....just in time to start doing art work and
printing again....

My boyfriend got out of his long vacation via the state prison
system....one too many budweisers....it is nice to have someone around
the house fixing the four million projects at this old school house.  It
is nice to have a man around the house again.....it was a boring wait...

I am glad you came by one day to unload me of those appliances and saw
this place.....I feel really lucky to have it even if it does keep me
busy and broke....I still love it.  I always wanted to live in a big
mansion....didn't know it would be in third ward....

So did you lose the Old Quarter Screen in the flood.....??  That would
be funny to hang on to it for 25 years and then the Texas flood gets it.

I think about you alot and wish you were up and going along....I love
that I have gotten to see you a few times over the last few
years....especially since none of us ever get out much or can stay awake
past ten o'clock anymore....and I really like Gail....she is a very
sweet and wonderful gal....don't need to tell you that.....you know I
had a terrible crush on you forever when I was younger....I was glad to
see you married a great person....and one that hung close to you....she
wasn't letting anyone in too close....I don't blame her....she's a
keeper....!!

I love you Dale....all the things that everyone has said about you over
the past 30 years has all been true....you are a great man.....

your friend always....Mickey Phoenix

HANG IN THERE BIG DALE YOU ARE THE BEST

Yo.  This is Vince.

Dale,

The Old Quarter and your patience with all us "kids" coming up under
Townes back in the bad old days has made me strive ever since to be the
best I could be.  I'm proud to have come up in such an environment of
your making.  From the best,

to the best.

Dale,

I think you had a finger or 2 wrapped from a sprain as you were doing this handstand at Uxmal. I always liked turning the pix upside
down to show you floating in space while holding up the world.  Thanx pal, for introducing me to Yucatan, 1978. It WAS a trip!
And great scuba!

Dale is resting at home in his hospital bed.  I saw him today (January 3, 2002) and he looked good.   He has been admitted to Hospice Care.  They come out to the home and make sure he is not in pain, etc.

There is a marvelous article by John Nova Lomax about the nightclub Dale had (with Rex Bell) in the seventies, The Old Quarter, in this week's Houston Press.   I hope the link below works for all of you so you can read it.

Dale joins us in wishing everyone a Happy New Year.  We are so grateful for all of your good thoughts and prayers.   Please keep them up.

Peace,
Deb

Dear Dale,

Twenty Four years ago or so, I first heard your voice, ..."the restrooms are upstairs...no, we're not talkin' 'bout that...", and from that time on you came to mind whenever I thought of that great Townes recording.   We've never met, but I hear your voice, just like I hear Townes', ..."Sorry 'bout the air conditioners bein' off...".  You are kindly in my thoughts here in the Rocky Mountains of Idaho.

Dale,

Cathi Wise shared this Web site with me!  I know you don't know me but I
know your wife.  Gail is a wonderful person who I have always admired and
respected!!  Of course you already know how wonderful she is!

Just want you to know we (and all of the Texas Children's Health Plan crew)
are thinking of you!

Happy Holidays!

Dale,   Thanks to Beth-Renee, (a nurse who can use computers), we got into this web site.  It is awesome!  It was great to see you yesterday, but I do
miss your ponytail!  Glad Gail kept it!  Much Love and God's Peace.

Hi Dale,

My thoughts and prayers are with you and Gail, and have been for many months.  If prayers and warm wishes can beat this thing, we're on our way to
a good recovery.

Much love,

Dale - just saw the picture of you and Eric - I didn't realize you also performed/sang/played guitar, whatever.  Why have you kept this a
secret?!!!!   Hang in there, thanks for being such a sweetie all the time!

Praying for you continually, Elayne

12-20-01

Hey Dale,

Just caught your web site. Aren't you the cool one to have your own site. How I hate it that I missed the reunion. My PC is old, so can't see the pictures very well, which might be better since all of us are not those crazy young hippies that hung out at the Old Quarter.

Sorry to hear that you are back in the hospital. Know it is the pits, but they should help you be more comfortable.

Want you to now that our van is finally running again. If you ever need to go somewhere and don't want to go through the trials and tribulations of climbing into a car, just let me know.

We are thinking of you and sending healing wishes and prayers your way.Love to Gail.

We love you,

Judy & Liz

Dear Dale:

What about the popcorn machine? Is there some way to turn up the volume on that thing?

Hope you get up some and feel better. The pool tables are upstairs.

I love you.

Hey Dale,

It was fun hooking up with you for the taped interview. You are always fun to be with. Can't wait to do it again. It is beautiful how people can not see each other for years and the spirit of such familiarity is the still same every time . You are a landmark in my entering young adult life and many others, I'm sure. I am so glad my path crossed
yours. Who knows where I would have ended up.  Sorry I missed the reunion. You and Gail are real troopers in life's challenges. May the force be with you.

Love always,
Melissa Noble

12/15/01

Dear Dale,

I'm so very sorry to hear of your illness, and want you to know that you've been in my prayers since hearing the news.  Hang in there!!!  We really missed you at the class reunion. My laugh muscles ached for a week and I'm sure would've ached longer if you had been there!!!  It was a good group and we all did a lot of "memory stretching"!!  Sandra (Lowry) Gibbs and I roomed together, so it was just like old times!!!  It was nice to "return to the womb"!!!  I hope you got to look thru Terry Simon Waggoner's class website and enjoyed the pictures.  I'm glad they didn't give a prize for gaining the most weight----I would've won!!! Oh well!

You take care, Dale, and please know that lots of people are keeping you in their thoughts.  Did you remember that I live right behind Rex and Malynna Miller? Isn't it a small world?

All good wishes--------Gayle (Lindsey) Flemons

12/14/01

Dale,

I hope you are feeling a little bit better!  Even though I am staying in touch with Deb, on a daily basis I thought it would be cool to send you a note on your new bandaid site. This is great! You have so many friends that love you.  Hang in there. Jimmy will see you tomorrow.    Love, jimmy &kuri

I think it's "neat" that the guy that set up this site is from Bryan!   U think he may know where Iola is   LOL

Dale,

After so many years of knowing you and Gail through our many mutual friends, it's a real pleasure to have caught up with y'all at last at the Dobson beach house in Galveston.  Just a quick note here to let you know we're thinking good thoughts for your recovery.  Let us know where we can help or be of assistance.  Hubba hubba and hugs and kisses.

Much Love,  Doug and Ellen.
